I hated the Horrors last release. Very rare that I would have checked back into them but the fact that Portishead was producing their new album really intrigued me. They also released a new song to the public not too long ago called A Sea Within A Sea. (Video above) which I was skeptical about. Seemed they got too cool overnight. However after listening to their whole album, Primary Colours… I stand corrected. Phenomenal album. I love it when a band can exceed stereotypes or predetermined notions. I can say that I am truly excited to see them when they come to Minneapolis May 11th. Highlights for me below… but the whole album is fucking way good.
Despite the cover artwork and his overall aesthetic in general Gui Boratto’s new release Take My Breath Away is pretty top notch. It was released on KOMPAKT just this month. To be honest it was only because of the terrible aesthetic that I didn’t pick this up until now… that and Mike Simonetti’s twitter reminded me to check it out. So I did.
I like the sound… you can tell he’s from Brazil when you listen to it. Didn’t sound like Germany… didn’t sound Chicago… didn’t sound like Europe even really to me. He uses some unique sounds. Anyway I don’t review records or albums so this is already a little too long. Highlights for me are below…
Joshua Petherick is an Australian-born artist living and working in The Netherlands. His shirts he did for SixPack France rule pretty hard. He’s got a great eye for stroke width/spacing/shading/etc. Hot.
On Tuesday all the gooonz went out to the Katy Perry show at First Ave. I was djing in the entry that night as well, with Stereo Total and Leslie and the Lys. Overall it was a ton of fun. Katy Perry had a crazy stage set up and I was able to record the whole of Hot N Cold (on my new flip mino hd hollaaaa)
Right before this she did a version of the Hokey Pokey, but I accidentally deleted it (on my new flip mino hd holllaaa). I LOL’d when she put the mic in front of the speaker and the room was filled with piercing feedback. I actually think you can hear me laughing. In the Entry Stereo Total(MYSPACE) was awesome and Leslie and the Lys(MYSPACE) did exactly what we all expected.
NEWAYYYZZZ. What kind of blog post would this be without a relevant MP3, so here is a mash up that I made a while ago.
We were recently asked to do a mix/podcast for our friend Damien Correll with his fresh podcast series, Heard & Not Seen. We got pretty weird with this mix… animal sound effects and all… anyway this is an advanced copy of the mix so enjoy .

Hey all. Thanks for coming to Honeymoon 20! It was one of the weirdest I think we’ve ever had? First and foremost let me apologize for the RSVP troubles. Since my other half was at SXSW (who normally handles the rsvps) I personally tried to organize them. It sounds like I must have missed a column of names. Sorry! I’ll think of something to do to make it up to you .
With that said the photos have been uploaded from the night. Check the party photos link above.
I am also going to start taking photos again from here out…
Coming up we have BOMP this Friday. I will post more on that when I get the details.
Then I must share this tune! It has been in my head all weekend.
Tanlines are a guy from NYC production duo Brothers and a guy from the band Professor Murder. They sound like the Fader blog. 4/4 kicks confused and repurposed by stuttering, syncopated snares and bits of African percussion, kwaito-inspired melodies, droning post-punk bass, and repetetive wordless vocals that belie their Brooklynite pedigree.
It’s great stuff. Immersive, melodic, druggy, happy. Suggests a radiant watercolor dreamspace stuck halfway between London pirate radio and Santos Party House. I wish there was enough of this stuff to fill up an entire DJ set, but there isn’t.
You know this band the Friendly Fires? I think they’re fucking terrible. I think they’re a perfect example of what England sucks at in music. A lot of people would consider them cutting edge shit because they’re young and pretty and jocking LCD Soundsystem presets from 5 years ago. They have some kind of crazy record label money behind them, so that every few months they can come out with a remix single that’s like a balearic Jerry Bruckheimer movie of a remix single. That fucking Aeroplane mix is like a big gleaming stinking monument to cheese and hairgel and commercials for cars with names like “Vibe” and “Soul”. It sucks. It’s Death Cab. VH1. Aveda waiting room. Paste magazine.
Sorry I don’t know what that had to do with anything.
This is some other song that sounds like what I said Tanlines sounds like but with words about coconuts and gurus and beaches. It’s by someone called “Delorean”. I know that sounds like it’s going to suck. I don’t think it does.
