don cannon

I want to talk a little bit about a couple of producers I think are important. Like, generally everyone knows to check up on the Neptunes or Timbaland or whatever, but to be perfectly honest I feel like those dudes have sounded really tired 90% of the time for the last several years and there are a lot of people out now that are way better. I swear at some point I’ll get around to posting about something that isn’t gangsta rap or Boris, but right now all I got in me is more of this D-Boy bullshit.

Don Cannon is probably best known as an affiliate of Atlanta’s mixtape king DJ Drama. DJ Drama is one of the biggest names and biggest innovators of the hip-hop mixtape form, which as you may or may not know is the future of the record industry. You ask someone with their ear to the ground what the best rap albums of the last several years are, and you’re going to hear about a lot of shit that was never touched by a major label. Some of the most classic records from some of rap’s biggest names are mixtapes presided over by DJ Drama and Don Cannon – especially Lil’ Wayne’s “Dedication 2″ and the motherfucking grandfather of of this D-Boy shit, Young Jeezy’s “Trap Or Die”.

Drama and Cannon came to even greater prominence when they were busted by the feds last year on racketeering charges. The record industry finally caught wind of the mixtape scene and chose it’s two biggest names to be scapegoats for it. The outcome of the trial will probably decide the future of the record industry, though even if they do time for putting out mixtapes it’s probably not going to stop people from continuing to explore the format. Glass Candy and the Chromatics have basically eschewed the label-driven album format for now, in favor of self-released CD-Rs modelled after hip-hop mixtapes. Expect more and more people to start doing that shit as time goes on.

But enough of that shit. Regardless of his legal troubles, when Don Cannon decides to stop making news and put hand to keyboard, he’s made some of the most classic beats in modern hip-hop. Dude is one of the few producers in the game that can flip soul samples into sounding as hood as the hard trance shit that’s making so much money for The Runners, Cool & Dre, and Shawty Redd. Fact is, dude made “Go Crazy” by Young Jeezy, which is just about the most hood thing I have ever heard in my life. Fun fact: BET uses this song as an unofficial theme song for “The Wire”.

Young Jeezy – Go Crazy

Jay-Z caught wind of the buzz around “Go Crazy” and immediately jumped on a remix trying to co-opt it like he did with Rick Ross’ “Hustlin’”. It sort of feels inferior to the original though. To me, “Go Crazy” is like basically perfect. Cannon and Jeezy teamed up again for “Mr. 17.5″ off Jeezy’s second album, but Jeezy didn’t come as nice over it. I would kill for an instrumental of this thing – Cannon turns snippets of The Miracles’ “Give Me Just Another Day” into a complete monster of a track. It sounds like it should cost a million dollars to rap over this.

Young Jeezy – Mr. 17.5

Most recently, Cannon did the beat for the Outkast track “The Art of Storytellin’ Part 4″ off DJ Drama’s major label coming-out party, Gangsta Grillz: The Album. Anyone would probably sound good over this beat, but this happens to have Andre 3000′s best verse in like a fucking decade sitting on it. He murders this track in front of it’s own children, burns it, and then feeds it to dogs.

TRANCE RAP UPDATE

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

The video for “Say Yeah” by Wiz Khalifa is on the front page of MySpace.com. Trance Rap is blowing up in 2008. I don’t know what’s more awesome – the Alice Deejay sample, or the video itself, which defies every expectation I had when I first started warning you about this track two months ago.

So my girlfriend pointed this out to me this weekend and I was so pumped about it I figured I’d throw it on the blog and make it some sort of “section” for anytime I come across stuff like this and for whatever it is worth.

This picture was on someones mypsace as a photo caption. Meet “.greg MF cash. [cobra kai]” I assume the “MF” is for MUTHA FUCKIN!!! and after doing some research of 2 seconds “Cobra Kai” is his group of friends that he LOVES and devotes everything to… Here are his promo pictures with his friends:

Promos usually promote bands but hey it is 2008 and we gotta promote our cliques right? Fuck yeah. That’s how we do it.

Here is Greg again:

This position looks familiar…? I love the white belt and distressed denim Greg!

Thanks for supporting moongoons.com. Feel free to drop Greg a line here.

Been a grip

Monday, February 25, 2008

So it has been a little grip since we wrote much but a lot of good stuff has been going down. Jonathan has been on the East coast playing shows with Will Eastman and Designer Drugs. James and I have been back home doing some of the local stuff. We went to Duluth this past weekend for our monthly out there at the Red Star. A damn good time indeed. The crowd was an odd one… our first request was for Hercules and the Love Affair which threw us the fuck off because usually Duluth wants Dead or Alive followed up by Duran Duran.

No party photos from out there but we managed to take some interesting shots of the city:

Hip Stuff
This is Hip Stuff but it is going out of business…

SHOCKER!!!
This was a shocker “ride” at this arcade called THRILLZ. Dope name but… uhh the shocker chair? Are you kidding me?

Oh Yeah! Only one of the handles works on the shocker chair… sorry guys.
