muppets-animal

We’ve been given a tasty new edit by London’s ZNTN Who is turning into the man of the moment. His tracks have been everywhere including the always awesome Beats In Space. He also has an upcoming release on Astrolab (with an awesome Shit Robot remix). You all should def. keep on eye on him and keep checking his myspace because he does a really good job of putting up his new stuff.

it’s put together by Tim Turbo and seen. (who claim to have a non-hippie reggae and dancehall stuff)

Tim Turbo also runs a pretty cool blog called Cyan Wait

Anyways check it out b/c it’s kinda awesome.

vivian girls

Hi, I’m James and I basically make two kinds of posts. The kind where I talk about rap music and the kind where I talk about new bands. This is one of the ones where I talk about new bands.

Vivian Girls – Telepathic Love

This is a song by the Vivian Girls. The Vivian Girls are three girls from Brooklyn who play music. The genre tags on their Myspace Page are “Punk”, “Surf”, and “Shoegaze”, and I mean that’s actually sort of accurate I guess?

They have an album coming out on Mauled By Tigers, which I guess put out Matt and Kim at one point, but after the initial pressing by them, it’s going to be reissued by In The Red, which put out Black Lips and Jay Reatard and King Khan & The BBQ Show and The Dirtbombs and a bunch of other stuff I don’t really like that much. But I really like the Vivian Girls.

They were supposed to play a show here at Future Pasture in June, but a little over a week ago the city shut the venue down and all the shows were cancelled. It might be relocated or something, I don’t know. Hopefully the dudes that run the space get their entertainment license game correct or the show can be relocated to somewhere else, and hopefully wherever they end up playing doesn’t smell really bad and have fat bald peeps throwing elbows everywhere.

XYX – Anel and her Problem

This is a song by XYX, from Monterrey, Mexico. Their bio reads thusly:

It took the mathematicians 4 months and several acid trips to create this bizarre project with just a bass, a drum set and a lot of delay. Mou (from Bam Bam) and Señorita Anhelo (from Mamá Burger) gave birth to a whole album in just 2 days in the studio. SISTEMA DE TERMINACIÓN SEXUAL is the name of their first 4 track 7″ wich S-S RECORDS (Sacramento, CA) put out.

Obviously they are awesome.

these truly are the end times

So, you probably know this band No Age by now. Pitchfork loves them, MTV loves them, and maybe you love them, too. One of the blogs in my RSS feed actually authored a long, passionate diatribe about how the Ed Banger thing is over and we all need to move on to real punk rock shit now.

I mean I laughed, but this shit is probably going to happen. I wasn’t paying attention really, because you know, like, I like D.A.N.C.E., but there’s a bunch of small labels in the South and on the West Coast that have been putting out fuzzy lo-fi throwback shit for years now and not caring if anyone in New York gives a fuck. If you like No Age or Times New Viking or Jay Reatard then all of their friends have bands that you’re going to be hearing about, too.

I’m not like, totally psyched on this shit. I bought White Light/White Heat and Sister when I was in high school too but I guess I was too worried about waking my parents up to play my guitar that loud. Whatever. I’ve listened to a bunch of stuff like this over the past couple of years and I can’t claim any authority but out of all this stuff this is the shit I like:

Home Blitz – Stupid Street

Home Blitz is from Princeton, NJ. This song was apparently recorded on the street, outside their house, with battery powered amps.

Finally Punk – Boyfriend Application

Finally Punk is a bunch of cute girls from Austin. If you read blogs you might have heard “What the fuck, Missle?” show up on some of them last year. I get kind of scowly whenever I hear people talk about punk coming back, because to me punk is like, smelly assholes with bad tattoos moshing. The whole reason people started calling it “indie rock” instead of “punk” was because girls couldn’t go to punk shows without getting groped or worse by macho assholes in mosh pits. There are YouTube videos of Finally Punk shows where no one moshes at all and the singer wanders around in the crowd harmlessly so this seems OK right now but I’m keeping an eye on it.

Mika Miko – Too Cute To Puke

Mika Miko is a band of girls from Los Angeles. So sayeth their wikipedia entry: “In 2004 they gained local popularity for their frenetic live performances which emulate being at a party and often take place at parties.”

Man what do you even say to that?

lobster.jpg

According to THIS ARTICLE in the New Zealand Herald, few people in the Nicaraguan town of Bluefields ever have to actually work. It used to be a fishing village that had an economy based on the catching Lobster – eventually, nature conspired to give them a different source of income. Because of a system of sea currents or some shit, bales of cocaine that are dumped from boats smuggling drugs across the gulf into Miami tend to wash up on the beaches there. The town’s residents, who call the stuff, I shit you not, “The White Lobster”, just comb the beaches looking for Kilos of the shit and then they sell it to tourists.

Imagine walking along a beautiful tropical beach and finding a huge waterproof package containing several kilograms of uncut cocaine.

That’s sort of what downloading the new Kills album is like.

To wit:

These are album covers by a band called National Skyline. The albums? Not very good. The cover art? Dude, in 2002 this shit looked like it was downloaded from God’s Yahoo! photos album. If you had this shit on vinyl, you could probably get girls to sleep with you just by showing it to them. Actually playing it would just get girls to sleep. You’re welcome, I just saved you three hours.

If you’re old enough or emo enough to remember “Stars” by Hum then get me drunk sometime and I can probably talk about the Champaign-Urbana space rock scene for days. Everyone always says that the Smashing Pumpkins were into My Bloody Valentine and stuff and that’s why Siamese Dream rules so much but that’s a lie that Billy Corgan made up after someone told him it was cool to tell people you like My Bloody Valentine. He was really just ripping off the Poster Children.

Otherwise just cop that new Boris. It’s really good and no one will tell you this but it sounds just like Hum half the time. I know it’s cooler to say it sounds like Merzbow or Doom Metal or something but I have listened to all kinds of Merzbow and Doom Metal and I am telling you it sounds like Hum a lot more than it sounds like that.

Here’s a track. It’s way long so I had to zShare it. I also don’t know what the proper title of it is because I don’t speak Japanese. If you know any Japanese people maybe you can ask them what it is. I used to do that with stuff all the time and it was never a problem because all the Japanese people I’ve met have been super nice.
